Background

Well I’d like to give a little background on this cigar, but I can’t seem to find much on it.  I know that Small Batch got a bunch of new blends in from Regius right after the show, but I can’t find any blend info on them on the web.  I do know they come in 16, yes 16, different sizes.  There are also a total of 6 blends that have a similar number of sizes and looks like the normal black Regius band on top with a bright foot band denoting the wrapper.  I can only guess on the tobaccos, but if it is similar to the rest of the black label line it has a Nicaraguan filler and binder with what I’m thinking is an Ecuadorian sun grown wrapper.  This was the first one I smoked.

Prelight

The wrapper is a medium-dark brown with a reddish tint to it.  The wrapper does show quite a bit of oils and some tooth to it.  As mentioned above the top band is familiar if you’ve seen their original release with the second band letting you know it isn’t the normal blend.  When I gave the cigar a squeeze it was fairly firm and without any soft spots.  After putting my nose to the wrapper I could detect a light leather aroma, with a light barnyard coming from the foot.  After clipping it and taking a cold draw, I got a good draw with some wood and sweet notes from it.

Flavor

It starts off with a good amount of spice, which if I’m correct about the tobaccos, makes sense.  I also noted some wood, cinnamon and a slight bitter taste from it.  It started off at medium-full strength.  As I moved into the second third the spice did tone itself down and I noted flavors of wood, leather, cinnamon, and a bit of creaminess on the finish.  Once I got into the final third the spice started to come back and the strength built to full strength as I got a slight nicotine hit from it.

Construction

The draw was pretty good, although I felt like I had to keep puffing on it to keep it lit.  The burn line while slightly wavy at the beginning didn’t cause any problems.

Value

It’s good to see companies still introducing cigars at the below $10 price point.

Conclusions

While it wasn’t the most complex cigar I’ve had I did enjoy it.  It might be a little young so some time in the humidor might help.  It probably was one of the strongest cigars I’ve had from this company, and because of that it might not be for everyone.  With six new brands you might find one of them that appeals to you.  Head over to SmallBatchCigar.com to pick your favorite size from the sample packs they’ve created.
