Cigar Review: Eddie Ortega Wild Bunch Wild Bill

Eddie Ortega was kind enough to send me a sample of the next three in the Wild Bunch series. This is the seventh in the series of twelve. This cigar is a Nicaraguan puro comprised of binder and fillers from the Jalapa and Esteli areas with a Nicaraguan habano wrapper. I was able to smoke one of these cigars for review.

The wrapper on this sample was a oily rich milk chocolate brown in color, with some lighter mottling to it. There was also a good amount of tooth to it with some medium veins. Giving the cigar a squeeze I got a slight amount of give but I couldn’t find any soft spots. Putting my nose to the wrapper I got the aroma of leather and barnyard with chocolate and barnyard coming from the foot. After clipping it and taking a cold draw on it I got notes of sweet basil with a good draw.

Lighting it up brought about lots of flavor of cinnamon, leather, chocolate with a sweet finish and a red pepper spice on the retrohale. The spice on the tongue did ramp up a bit about half an inch in. The burn and draw were ok. The cigar was a solid medium to start.

As I moved into the second third I started to get some mocha flavors thrown in with the cinnamon, leather, and cream. The burn started to get a bit wavy but the draw continued without any problems. Even though the spice was less than the first third the second third was at the upper end of medium in regards to strength.

The final third saw the cigar finish off well. The spice did start to come back and I started to get a slight nicotine hit from it as well. The flavors really didn’t change much from the second third. I burn did even itself out and the draw continued on doing great.

Overall this was a very good cigar. It wasn’t as complex, to me, as the others in the Wild Bunch series. However it is something that I think most people can approach as it isn’t too strong and the cost is right.
