Cigar Review: Nestor Miranda 70th Nicaraguan

Lancero, 7” x 40 ring gauge / ~$16, Maxamar’s

Today’s review is the second part to the one I did last week. You can view that one here. The difference between this one and the Dominican is pretty self explanatory. It is a Nicaraguan puro made in the My Father factory. The foot band is a blue instead of red and says the country of origin. This was the first one of this blend I have tried.

The wrapper on this cigar is a medium dark brown in color with a slightly golden tint to it. The veins were definitely more prominent than they were on the other blend. The wrapper while oily, although not as much as the Dominican. When I gave the cigar a squeeze I couldn’t detect any soft spots and it was fairly firm to the touch. Putting my nose to the wrapper I was able to detect the aroma of barnyard, with leather, chocolate and nuts coming from the foot. After clipping it and taking a cold draw on it I got the taste of leather and roasted nuts.

The cigar start off with lots of chocolate, leather, earth and coffee flavors. The spice was fairly intense especially on the retrohale. It however wasn’t as intense as what I got in the beginning from the Dominican. The draw and burn were good to start. The spice did noticeably drop off in intensity as I neared the end of the first third. I would classify this cigar in the medium range in regards to strength at this point.

With the spice almost gone I noted flavors of earth, coffee, chocolate and hints of green herbal spices. The cigar didn’t have the sweetness that I noted in the Dominican either. The draw and burn continued to be perfect.

The final third saw the spice start to come back, but never really got out of the upper end of medium in my opinion. I started to get some cocoa, leather and nuts flavors. The draw and burn continued to be great.

Overall while this was a good cigar, it just didn’t wow me as the Dominican blend did. I don’t know if it was just a bad day for me or the cigar was just off. I do think that since it isn’t as strong it might appeal to more smokers. I will let these rest a bit before trying one again.
