Cigar Review: Padilla Reserva Maduro

The next cigar that I have for review comes from my friend Ian Hummel of Oliva Cigars. In exchange for (legal) software he needed, Ian was kind enough to send me a care package of various premium cigars, this one included. I had seen the buzz on Twitter when these cigars became available to the public but have not had the fortune to try them. Needless to say, I was eager to give them a try.

No issues were found before lighting this cigar (chipping of the wrapper, improper packing, etc.). The pre-light aromas I gathered from the cigar included leather and a touch of sweetness in which both my wife and I said that it reminded us of molasses. Just as I did with my last review, I punched the end of the cigar and toasted the end with my butane torch and took my first couple draws right in succession.

The punch seemed to lend itself well to this gauge of cigar as my draws were VERY OPEN, almost to the point where I would appreciate just a little resistance. Again I found the leather and molasses notes but just a touch of spice that hit the very back of the tongue. I would characterize overall body of flavor as medium to full but very smooth on the palette. This would be another fuller-bodied cigar I would recommend to friends that wanted something “stronger” but not strong enough to kick them in the chest.

pdm2I did find that the burn did start out pretty uneven but I am happy to report that it did even out by the midway point. And it was at the midway point where the cigar’s flavors toned down several notches. The spice was gone completely; the remaining leather and molasses flavors lingered subtely throughout the remaining smoking of the cigar.

My final thoughts on the Padilla Reserva Maduro are thus:

  • Another medium to full bodied cigar that brings great flavor points but isn’t strong enough to scare people away
  • Smooth body of flavors with notes of leather, molasses and spice
  • Responds very well to a punch

Thank you for reading this review and I look forward to sharing my thoughts with you all next time.
