Background

The back of the bottle reads:

The coffee lover’s consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, biter and imported chocolates, and two types of coffee. This stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever.

Founder’s Breakfast Stout is a beer I’ve heard talked about ever since I started my journey of discovery into the world of craft beer. I can’t say why I avoided it as long as I did, but I finally ponied up for a 4-pack a few weeks back. I drank two, gave one away, and saved the last one for this review.

Breakfast Stout weighs in at 8.3% ABV and a relatively high 60 International Bitterness Units. It is available from October to January.

Notes

Thick and dark in the glass, the Breakfast Stout has an initial hit of coffee flavor, followed up by malty sweetness and finishing with a little more bitterness. Although it is high in IBUs, the bitterness is balanced remarkably well with sweeter flavors.

That mix of bitter and sweet is what attracts me so much to Tatuaje’s Broadleaf Collection cigars, as well. This time I fired up a Noellas, one of the vitolas that was released widely at one time. I enjoyed these so much at that time that I went through two boxes of them all by myself.

The pairing of beer and cigar was another of those inspired pairings. If you are going to drink any stout that has a good amount of both bitterness and sweetness, you really should think about getting a Tatuaje Maduro. Failing that, go for another cigar with a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper…Tennessee Waltz, 601 La Bomba Warhead, Mi Querida.
