Libation Review: Founders Porter

  • FoundersPorter12 oz bottle
  • $9.99 6-pack
  • Purchased at Food City

Background

Ever since joining Untappd, I’ve tried to find ways to try out a bunch of different beers without doing taproom crawls…they are fun, but punishing to this old body. One of my favorite things is to head down to the local supermarket—Food City—and take advantage of their “Build Your Own 6-Pack” offer. For $9.99 you can choose from their single-bottle craft beers and try out a bunch of stuff you might not want to buy 6-packs of. One I got this way was Founder’s Brewing’s Porter. I liked it so much, I bought a full 6-er of them next time I was in the store.

In the craft beer biz, it seems like they are always trying to find a unique and “crafty” name for a beer…in this case, it’s just “Porter.” The description is “Robust Porter.’ The bottle has an image of an attractive lady in dark Victorian garb and under Porter it reads “Dark, Rich & Sexy”…then there’s a black heart with a glow effect around it. The company’s website has this to say:

Pours silky black with a creamy tan head. The nose is sweet with strong chocolate and caramel malt presence. No absence of hops gives Founders’ robust porter the full flavor you deserve and expect. Cozy like velvet. It’s a lover, not a fighter.

I have consumed about 4 bottles of Founder’s Porter before this review.

Notes

Like most of my other favorite beers, the Porter pours thick and black with a creamy tan head that dissipated fairly quickly. The aroma was malty with notes of bittersweet chocolate and espresso bean.

Porters are usually just a little lighter than Stouts (“stout” starting out as a description of particularly strong porters) and this version adheres to that basic rule. It was medium-to-full in body with an up-front maltiness and a nice balance of bitter coffee and sweet chocolate flavors. It goes down smooth and velvety.

I opted for a Dunbarton Todos Las Dias to pair with Founder’s Porter, a strong, full-bodied Nicaraguan puro. Todos Las Dias had plenty of earth and cedar flavor with just a mild sweetness, especially in the Wide Belicoso vitola that I opted for.

The Porter added extra sweetness to the pairing with the cigar, which turned out to be a much more pleasing experience than I typically have with this cigar.
