Background

From the Peterson website:

In London in 1865, two German brothers, George and Frederick Kapp, established a pipe-making business. George Kapp & Co. In 1874, Frederick decided to strike out on his own and moved to Dublin to continue his pipe making endeavors. A year later, a young Latvian, Charles Peterson, joined the business. Charles brought with him two great assets: a creative instinct for designing pipes plus outstanding craftsmanship.

Peterson’s pipe tobaccos follow in the same spirit of “outstanding craftsmanship” with an eye to using the best tobacco leaf to create “unique and distinctive blends that emphasize the character and heritage of our name.” The adherence to heritage definitely went into the creation of the 1865 Mixture, named for the year the company came into existence.

1865 Mixture is a luxury blend of Virginia and Latakia leaf, designed as full-bodied for the seasoned pipe smoker. I was given an almost-full tin of this tobacco by a customer who just isn’t that crazy about English Oriental blends.

1865leafNotes

In the tin, the 1865 Mixture appears as dark as any pipe tobacco that I can remember, unless you’re talking about a straight Black Cavendish or something similar. It’s almost like Maduro cigar leaf with a few strands of more golden-colored tobacco dispersed throughout.

I opened up the tin and let it stand nearby while I wrote this and the aroma from it was intense. Surely this is one of the stronger English Oriental blends I have encountered. The aroma was rich and very smoky.

Once fired, the 1865 Mixture is full-bodied with a tremendously woody flavor, backed up with the Latakia smokiness and just a touch of sweetness that came through as a molasses note.

I found it to be rich and complex, strong and satisfying. I need to smoke Dunhill Night Cap again, but I might have finally found a pipe tobacco that I like more.
