Jack Daniels Heritage Barrel

Bourbon Friday: Jack Daniels Heritage Barrel

I didn’t jump onto the Jack Daniel’s aged whiskey train when it left the station. I had recently had the JD Bottled-In-Bond and thought it was the best Jack product I had ever had…but it still tasted like Jack. Not a bad thing if you love JD, but…I don’t really. I did taste either the 10 year or 12 year and thought they were very good, but still don’t see paying the “hype pricing” that those bottles (and the 14 year) demand. Recently, though, I gave the brand one more chance with the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Heritage Barrel Toasted Barrel (all the barrels, apparently).

The JD website says this will be a shelf-stable release and the price of about $75 seems to indicate that, as well. The use of the term “Heritage Barrel” is never really explained, but I did read somewhere that they did just a Level 2 Char on these barrels, resulting in more of a toasted barrel. Then they are aged at least seven years in their highest elevation barrel houses before being bottled at 100 proof (50% ABV). My bottle is from barrel #25-08300, which was filled on 7/12/17 and emptied on 11/7/25.

The color of the Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Heritage Barrel was a dark amber. It wasn’t terribly viscous in the glass with quickly developing and falling legs when swirled around. The aroma was great…marshmallow, vanilla, caramel. Taking a sip, it seemed a little thin at first, but had a nice sweetness, punctuated by brown sugar at the tip of the tongue. It quickly got spicy, probably the result of this being my first sip of the day, but there was a nice lingering pepperiness, along with baking spice and a fruity sweetness that made me think mostly of green apples.

This now has the place of “best Jack Daniel’s product I’ve ever had,” thanks to its beautiful complexity and approachability…not to mention that it doesn’t really taste anything like Old No. 7, Gentleman Jack, or even the Bonded expressions. Hard to believe this comes from the same mash bill! Great job to you folks out there in Lynchburg!
