Background

We go through this about once a year it seems…what do you smoke when the temperature is either too cold or too hot outside to enjoy a longer cigar? Maybe something in the 25 to 45 minute range…and that can depend solely upon your own body’s tolerance for the extreme heat or cold.

One of my all-time favorites for cold weather smoking has been the Tatuaje Petite Cazadores, a Nicaraguan blend with a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. Its 4×40 size always made for a compact 25 to 30 minute experience, but the company has threatened to usurp its place with a new release: Cohete, a short Robusto that’s the same length as the Petite Cazadores, but a larger ring gauge. Because both are also in the “brown label” family, they likely share similar blends of filler and binder, as well as the same Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. One difference here is that the Cohete is also available with Ecuadorian Habano or Sumatra wrappers.

I bought a couple Tatuaje Cohetes at Burns Tobacconist in Chattanooga. This is the second one I have smoked.

Notes

On March 1, it seemed that winter was done…but on March 12, we got a late winter storm that dropped a couple inches of snow overnight and left us with bitterly cold temperatures the next day. It was 2:30 in the afternoon and a whopping 30º at the time I took this cigar outside to smoke it.

The wrapper on the Cohete Reserva was a little lighter than I would have thought it would be for a Broadleaf Maduro, but it still had a rich earth and chocolate aroma to it, rough and oily at the same time to the touch. The cold draw was woody, earthy, and spicy.

Once fired up, I got red pepper flake riding on semi-sweet chocolate, earth, and cedar…in other words, just about perfect!

It all went pretty quickly…thankfully! Honestly 30º is just too cold to smoke without gloves on, even with the sun out. I sipped some whiskey with the cigar and it was all a great experience that was over in about 30 minutes. If you need a half hour smoke, the Cohete is an excellent choice.
