Freud Cigars Sigmund

Cigar Review: Freud Cigars Sigmund

When Eladio Diaz left Davidoff in 2021, one of the first new projects he took on was developing blends for the Freud Cigar company. I hadn’t had the pleasure of trying any of these new blends prior to today, when I finally crack open the cellophane on the Sigmund blend that I picked up while in California a couple months back. This blend was released in honor of Sigmund Freud’s birthday in May 2023, with the plan for a new release every year. I haven’t seen or heard about a 2024 release, so I wonder if the original plan has already fallen apart.

The Sigmund by Freud may be “just a cigar” but it is said to be made of 5 different filler tobaccos, along with binder and filler for a total of 7 different tobaccos in use…all of them undisclosed. But I trust in Eladio Diaz, someone who has a reputation of creating some of the most amazing Davidoff limited editions in history…and I’m really looking forward to this one. The size does give me pause…it’s a Double Corona, measuring 7.5” x 50 ring gauge which just proves to be a lot of cigar.

Befitting a super-premium limited-edition cigar with a ~$50 price tag, the wrapper is immaculate, a milk chocolate shade of brown with an oily touch and aroma of rich earth. The foot was barnyardy with a touch of cedar and bread. The cold draw was excellent with notes of earth, cedar, and pepper spice.

Once lit I got a medium-bodied smoke with bread, hay, and earth on the palate, roasted nuts and pepper spice on the retrohale. There seemed to be a lot of nuance and subtlety in this blend, which I hadn’t even touched in the first 5 minutes of this smoke. I also think the majority of the blend is probably Dominican leaf and that the wrapper is probably Ecuadorian Habano…but I guess we’ll never know for sure. And it’s quite possible I won’t see another of this 2023 release…but if I do (and I have the extra money) I’ll grab another!
