Note: I forgot to take a picture of this one…so I’m borrowing one from Small Batch Cigar, my favorite online purveyor of fine cigars. They’ve been very good to Leaf Enthusiast over the years…if your local shop doesn’t carry Crowned Heads, order from Small Batch!
In early 2024, Crowned Heads released a Maduro version of their Mil Dias line, one of my favorites of their wave of cigars made in the TacaNicsa factory headed by Eradio Pichardo. This blend features a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper, so I already like it…before I even heard about the Ecuadorian Habano binder and Nicaraguan fillers from Condega, Jalapa, and Ometepe.
The wrapper definitely falls under the “dark” category of Broadleaf, a rich dark chocolate brown with tons of oils and a rich earth and leather aroma. I remember the original Mil Dias being medium bodied but very flavorful…this was full bodied and quite strong right out of the gate. It was rich with notes of espresso bean and very high cacao content dark chocolate…very little sweetness in the mix at the start.
I sipped some Four Roses Single Barrel along with it, hoping it would add some extra sweetness. It did bring some, along more spiciness and a considerable amount of woodiness. It started kind of harsh but mellowed out after 10-15 minutes. I liked it enough to smoke it again, but I like the original Mil Dias better.
