It’s always fun when I get to try something new. Given the state of things right now, food isn’t going to be one of those things unless I am making it myself. But cigars and alcohol are both easy things to try, even when the country is sheltering in place. And like all of us adapting to our new-found time at home, I’ve had some extra time on my hands. One of those things on the list is to knock out cigars hovering around in my humidor awaiting review. The Villiger Do Brasil Maduro, introduced in January this year at the Tobacco Plus Expo, is interesting in that it is Brazilian puro. It’s common to see Nicaraguan puros but I would have to say this is my first one from Brazil. A huge thank you to Villiger Cigars for the opportunity to try this cigar.

No construction issues on the single cigar sent. The pre-light aromas brought a blend of wood and mild earth while the cold draw was faint on the palette with the same earth notes coupled with something like greens. Despite me taking a few minutes to light the cigar thanks to the non-stop wind, I did manage to get it lit and found a nicely balanced draw with opening notes of spice on the back and sides of the palette, earth around the entirety of the palette and pepper on the aftertaste. I would characterize the starting strength of this cigar as medium-to-full and get the feeling that it is going to change in the near future. And at the 29 minute mark, I was exactly right. The strength of the cigar began rapidly increasing well into full bodied range while more earth entered the palette. The spice and pepper still hovered around while woody notes entered into the aftertaste. What was interesting was that the cigar began to mellow slightly 25 minutes after that. The earthy notes finished out the cigar while still existing within full bodied territory. The total smoking time on the Villiger DO Brasil Maduro came in at 1:02.

Given that I dealt with ever-constant gusts of wind, I expected the cigar to be affected by the outside conditions of my deck. Thankfully, nothing ever came about. It smoked like a champ without a single issue to be found, other than it ending.

By-The-Numbers
Pre-light: 2/2
Construction: 2/2
Flavor: 4.5/5
Value: 1/1
Total: 9.5/10

To recap the Villiger Do Brasil Maduro:

  • A medium+ start with a nice flavor profile, only to get even better with the stark change in strength. Love it.
  • This is not going to appeal to everyone. The beginning of this cigar could be enjoyed by most, but it’ll get out of range fast.
  • Under $10.00 a cigar is always welcome for me.
  • I will be buying some of these when the funds allow. And likely not sharing with friends…whenever I can actually see them in person.

Thank you once again to Villiger Cigars for the chance to review this cigar and thank you all for reading. Stay safe out there.
