Background

It’s been a while since I got myself in to Monkey Town Brewing Company for a Wednesday beer and cigar. Sadly that’s just the way life goes sometimes…got too busy with working, weather has been unfriendly (too hot or too rainy), or just too tired. Finally made the time, though, when I heard about “Who’s Ready for Cake…and Whiskey?”

This is a collaboration brewed with Abridged Beer Company up near Knoxville. It is described on Monkey Town’s Facebook page as “a birthday cake-inspired Imperial Milk Stout brewed with lactose, vanilla beans, chocolate syrup and cocoa powder.”

This stout weighs in at 10% ABV and is only available for a limited time…let’s face it, by the time you are reading this, it’s too late.

Notes

I paired the “Cake…and Whiskey” with an Aging Room Quattro Nicaragua that our local Altadis rep gave me last week. After smoking about a third of the cigar, I can safely say that this Nicaraguan blend is a medium-bodied earthy blend with a touch of sweetness and coffee.

The beer was boozy and sweet with plenty of maltiness, a touch of coffee and plenty of chocolate and vanilla. I spoke to Kirby, the brewmaster here at Monkey Town, shortly before starting on this beer. He told me they were only able to leave this one in a barrel a short time, but it still picked up plenty of whiskey notes.

I wish everyone could experience this beer…or some of the many others that Kirby and his crew have come up with in the past few years. For now, though, get yourself down to Monkey Town Brewing Company in beautiful Dayton, Tennessee. Hit me up before you do and I’ll try to meet you down here for a cigar and beer.
