Cigar Extra: Saints & Sinners 2019, part 1

  • Vitola: Robusto-ish
  • ~$10
  • Purchased from SnS Club

Background

Believe it or not, this is the 3rd year I’ve done this…taking the Tatuaje Saints and Sinners Club member kit cigars and done short review takes on each of the 5 blends. If you haven’t been with me before on this or aren’t familiar…SnS Club membership includes a pack of special cigars unavailable anywhere else. In all 3 years I’ve been a member, it’s been 5 different blends (#1 through #5), 3 times each, for a total of 15 cigars.

SnS 2019 #2 was wrapped in a Connecticut Shade leaf and if experience holds true, it uses mostly (or all) Nicaragua tobacco for the filler and binder. In the Tatuaje catalog, there are only a few things with a Conny wrapper: Cabaiguan, The Tiff, and Negociant. This could be one of those 3 blends (in a special size)…or it could be something completely different.

Each installment of this series will be based on the second time I smoked the blend in question. All the cigars were part of the annual “member kit.” How do you become a member? You have to be invited by another member; each member gets to invite one other person each year.

Notes

The wrapper had a light, grassy aroma with a subtle sweetness, typical of Connecticut Shade leaf. The foot had a very appealing mix of earth and dark chocolate notes. I fired up the SnS 2019 #2 while driving and sipping on some of my normal morning coffee (8’O Clock Coffee French Roast, black, with Splenda).

Up front I got a heavy cedar flavor, followed by sweet hay and citrus. The retrohale was very nutty with a solid black pepper punch in the nose. The finish had a faint red pepper burning tingle on my lips. There was definitely some pepper in the mix, but nothing like some of the other Tatuaje/Don Pepin blends.

I continued to get grass and lemon zest on the milder flavor notes, instead of the creaminess that is so often found in these blends. It continued on mild-to-medium and nice, although not spectacular, at least not for me. After finishing this one off, I feel like it is probably an alternate size for the Tiff, a blend that never has been high on my list.

This post was originally supposed to run a few days ago, but scheduling got weird…again. This series will continue this Thursday and on the following 3 Thursdays after that.
