Background

For this look at the 2019 Saints & Sinners Club kit cigars, I started with Cigar #2 for part 1. I figured we would endeavor to make this as confusing and random-sounding as possible, so Part 2 is going to look at Cigar #5.

My first thought when I looked at SnS 2019 #5 was that it could be a take-off on the Face from the Monster Series. Primarily that’s because it has the same “Sleestak” head as that cigar. While that release was a Mexican San Andres, though, this has more of the look and feel of a Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro. Ultimately, we probably won’t find out what the exact blend is anytime soon.

This series is based on my second smoking of all 5 of the 2019 SnS Member Kit cigars. I have now been a member for 3 years. Do not ask for my membership referral…first (and second) dibs are already promised to two good friends.

Notes

So I mentioned this looks like a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. It had the color and almost as the oiliness as espresso beans. There was some darker rotting and a couple keloid-scar-looking areas that tend to be typical of Broadleaf and illustrate why it’s “an ugly leaf.” The aroma from the wrapper was rich earth, cocoa powder, and faint cedar, while the foot gave up notes of barnyard, bell pepper, and coffee beans.

The prelight draw was a little snug, but had a wonderful semi-sweet chocolate flavor overlaying earth and red pepper and cedar. After firing up the cigar, the cedar flavor was more prominent, with cocoa powder and coffee bean notes coming in right behind, then red pepper spice growing on lips, tongue, and nose.

Paired with Welles Special Reserve, the SnS 2019 #5 was medium-to-full in body with tons of cocoa powder, subtle sweetness, pepper, earth and coffee. In other words, it performed like a Broadleaf would; I would be very surprised if it were something other.
