Cigar Extra: Saints & Sinners 2019, part 4

  • Vitola: Robusto
  • 5.125” x 50 ring gauge
  • ~$10
  • Purchased from SnS Club

Background

In keeping with being pretty much as random as possible in the order I present these, I had a choice between 1 and 3 for the 4th slot in this series. I figured saving #1 for last would be too obvious, so here it is.

SnS 2019 #1 was a slightly long Robusto size. Like almost all Tatuaje and L’atelier and My Father Cigars products, I’m guessing some varietals of Nicaraguan for filler and binder. The wrapper is a tough one to figure out for this one. Best guess in looking at it and sniffing it is Ecuadorian Habano, maybe Oscuro.

This series is based on my second smoking of all 5 of the 2019 SnS Member Kit cigars. I have now been a member for 3 years. I’ve got more people wanting referrals than I have referrals to hand out for the club (one a year)…plus Pete Johnson keeps threatening to shut down the club every single year. I think he’s just joking every time, but who knows?

Notes

SnS 2019 #1 was a dark chocolate brown, looking in color like a Connecticut Broadleaf, but not in texture as it was quite smooth. The aroma of cedar and leather, along with some hay and earth made me think Ecuadorian Habano more than anything else. The foot had more prevalent notes of cocoa powder and richer earth.

It snowed earlier on the day I wrote this, but the weather warmed up just enough to melt everything just before the sun set. I headed outside about an hour before the sun went down, figuring this cigar would work in this weather and that it wouldn’t be too long to keep me outside as the mercury fell back below 40º. I paired it with some Russell’s Reserve Bourbon, a 10-year-old hand-picked selection of the Wild Turkey Distillery. I haven’t had RR in a long time and fell back in love with it after a couple drams yesterday. I also had a couple friends fall in love with it and help me drain over half the bottle. No joke, my friends, this Bourbon is one of the best available below $40. One of the reasons I haven’t bought it in a while is because I remember when I could get it for less than $30.

After clipping, the SnS #1 had earth and chewy leathery chocolate…yeah, that’s weird. Made me think of The Chuck, though, and I wonder if this is that blend in a different size, which is something that has been done in previous SnS packs…at least that’s what people have told me.

The cigar had plenty of dark chocolate with a touch of sweetness with earth and leather and wood playing secondary roles. It went exceptionally well with the Russell’s Reserve and I found myself wondering why I stayed away from this whiskey so long. I may have wasted a lot of time chasing all the “new and hot” Bourbons.
