Cigar Extra: Soap Box Lancero by Dissident Cigars

Background

What we’ve got here is another “event only” cigar, this time from the misfits at Dissident. They originally released Bloc and Soap Box about two years ago and have added some vitolas to both lines as time has passed, but the Soap Box Lancero is only available if you happen to get to a Dissident event.

The Soap Box blend is a Nicaraguan puro with fillers from Jalapa, Esteli, and Condega, a double Esteli binder, and a Jalapa wrapper.

In regular circumstances, I’ve been a much bigger fan of the Bloc blend, so when I first got a Soap Box Lancero at the IPCPR show, I didn’t think much of it. Then I smoked it. And I knew I had to get more. Honestly, I would probably buy a box of these if I could…I like them that much. Fortunately, Gorden and Ryan came to the Chattanooga Tweet-Up and brought more of this scrumptious little stick, so I have a chance to share it with you.

Notes

Sniffing the wrapper, all I could really pick up were some notes of earth and natural tobacco. The foot had a stronger earthy aroma.

Once lit, the blend of Nicaraguan leaf gave up flavors of hay, plum, and cedar, with a touch of a floral overtone and a hint of pepper on the retrohale.

I paired this cigar with some Old Fitzgerald Bourbon.

The combination of cigar and whiskey was excellent, with the sweetness of the Bourbon enhancing the natural sweetness in the leaf and neither one overpowering the other.

As I continued on, I got an increase in red pepper and the continuation of the floral notes.

Again, an excellent smoke that you should make a point of getting your hands on. While I heard “event only” from one source, I heard “from the company owners” at another source, so it could be that you can only get this if you go to an event where Gorden and/or Ryan are in attendance.

I wasn’t a huge Bloc fan but the Soap Box was very good…If this was a regular production cigar I would buy a box (10) based on your review and my experiences with the other size.
