It seems the trend in cigars in the last year or so is to go bigger. Longer length, bigger ring gauges…you know, something that is going to take two to three hours (or longer) to smoke. And you better get a good meal in you prior to smoking otherwise you’ll end up buzzing and sick from the overabundance of nicotine in your system. Don’t get wrong, when the opportunity and time allows for me to indulge in a lengthy cigar like I described above, I usually take it. But sometimes I need the complete opposite of that: A short cigar with a nice flavor profile. The Firecracker from La Flor Dominicana certainly looks the part and to this day, I’ve never had anything from them I disliked, so let us give it a closer examination.

No construction issues were found on the Firecracker. Wood and holiday spices were the pre-light flavor notes found. I gently pulled off the ‘wick’ and went for a cutter this time around. I bought a few of these and my second Firecracker I punched and the results didn’t fare as well as this one. After the light, I was met with a balanced draw and notes of pepper, wood and bitter coffee. The pepper hung out around the back of the palette while the wood and bitter coffee held to the middle to front of the palette. While I enjoyed the pepper notes, it only lasted about ten minutes before dying out. The bitter coffee notes became stronger after 20 minutes in. The flavor profile stayed like this until the end of the cigar, coming in at a brief 43 minutes.

Minus a relight or two, I had zero problems with the smoking of the cigar.

By-The-Numbers
Prelight: 2/2
Construction: 2/2
Flavor: 4/5
Value: 0.5/1
Total: 8.5/10

To recap the La Flor Dominicana Firecracker:

  • The Firecracker was good but it didn’t blow me away (maybe a bad choice of words given the name…).
  • The flavor profile on the Firecracker was nice but not overly complex.
  • I think this cigar could be enjoyed by all levels of cigar smoker.
  • As for the value, I’m torn on this. They are inexpensive enough to buy a handful of and not break the bank; however, for $0.75 to $1.00 more, I can buy a Nub, which are equally as good and last longer (for me).
  • Certainly try one if you see them at your B&M or your favorite online store. For me, I’ll be looking at a few of these to have in the humidor for my wife when she is back to enjoying cigars or when I want something short. Given that, I can’t see myself buying these in a larger number unless I found a smoking deal on a box.

As always, thank you very much for reading and I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.

Well I think LFD makes great sticks so this would be one I will try if I ever come across it. I thought for some reason this is a store exclusive to 2 Guys. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems to me for a short smoke like you were looking for this is the perfect solutions instead of a Nub which like you said lasts longer?. Great write up Jon.

Maybe if I was buying something else from the shop, I would throw a couple in the cart just to see what they’re about, but nothing I would buy by itself.
