I like being pleasantly surprised, especially by a cigar that I had no reason to expect much from. You pay less than $4 per stick and I’ve always known to keep expectations low…but what I’ve found from Jas Sum Kral Cigars has really challenged that notion. I already looked at the Tyrannical Buc Maduro, so I thought I’d share a few thoughts on the Connecticut Shade version today.
Maybe the same filler/binder combo as the Maduro…maybe not…who knows, really? I mean, the company doesn’t disclose much information about the blends at all. My palate tells me they are Nicaraguan-heavy…or maybe all Nicaraguan for filler and binder. The wrapper on this version is a Connecticut Shade, most likely grown in Ecuador.
There was one little flaw in the wrapper of this one, but in general they have been excellent quality, smooth and slightly oily to the touch, with a sweet hay and buttery aroma. The foot had aroma notes of earth and dark chocolate. The cold draw was easy and had flavors of earth and hay. Once lit, the Tyrannical Buc Connecticut had cedar and red pepper notes over lighter notes of natural tobacco. I’ve found this blend goes really well in the morning with coffee, or later in the day with bourbon. Today I paired it with a lighter-weight bourbon, Evan Williams Single Barrel Vintage…a nice accompaniment to a mild-to-medium cigar.
