Crux Cigars is one of the newer cigar brands that has piqued my interest over the last couple of years. If you remember, their Bull & Bear was a favorite of mine last year and I’ve have been more than happy to review several of their other offerings in 2014. The Crux Sports found me by welcome surprise, coming home from work to a package asking to check these out and give them a review. I can tell you that I welcome anyone sending me cigars (my birthday is five and half months away if anyone is wondering), so why don’t we get started, shall we?

No wrapper issues, nor soft or overly packed spots were found with my review cigar. I got very faint leather notes on the pre-light aromas and could not pull any flavors from a cold draw. I think its obvious but a cut is necessary here and after lighting, I found the draw to have a nice balance, coupled with opening notes of wood and light leather. This is a great example of a straight down the middle medium bodied cigar that could be enjoyed by all ranges of smokers. 15 minutes into the smoking, I felt the strength kick up quite a bit and noticed the addition of spicy notes, which are always a positive in my opinion. Nine minutes after that, the strength went up a bit more, adding heavier woody notes to the palette to finish out the cigar. Those last several minutes of the Crux Sports I felt it was very near to full bodied range. Total smoking time came in at a brief 31 minutes.

The only issue I had with my review cigar was that for the first half of it, I felt my draws either were nicely balanced or plugged up, taking a couple draws to get more than wisp of smoke out. Given the size of the cigar, it should be noted for newer smokers that these will get very hot to the touch at the end, so be advised.

Total: 9/10

To recap the Crux Sports:

  • When compared to the Skeeterz or the Ninfamaniac (all similar in size/gauge), the Crux Sports is easily my favorite out of the three. Should you be looking for a new smaller size cigar for brief smoking periods, try this.
  • As I said above, this is a perfect example of a medium bodied cigar that can be enjoyed by nearly all levels of smokers. Given the cost per stick, this would also constitute a perfect cigar to pass along to friends (the ones who don’t normally smoke) for special events.
  • It should also be noted that I paired the Crux Sports with a Laphroaig Select with fantastic results, should anyone of you need a gauge on what to drink with this cigar
  • I love the price and the depth of flavors and I would consider more of these in the future when I am in the market for a cigar this size. However, I honestly wish these came in a bigger size (Toro would be my preference). Should that day ever come, just put me down for a box.

Thank you very much for reading and I look forward to the next time I can share my thoughts with you.
