Thoughts from the Smoking Chair – 01/24/20

January in the Midwest…you can always guarantee that sooner or later, you end up with snow and ice, never mind the cold temperatures. Such as the case here, we’re currently being hit with freezing rain and flurries. And to top that off, the last few weeks have hovered in the low to mid 20s in the evenings. Those two things alone make smoking cigars outside a more difficult enjoyment. As such, I won’t have a formal review for you all this week. However, I do have a few things to cover today.

What’s hanging around the humidor

The humidor was looking pretty bare once the new year started. Lack of time to enjoy daily smokes, limited time for reviews, busy schedules and cold temperatures are a hindrance to the past time. Even still, the humidor needs to have some inventory in it. I found a nice deal online for a large Nub sampler at CI. The cost was lower than I have seen it before and that brand is always a hit with my wife and I (I’m not getting any kickbacks from CI nor Oliva). At the same time, they also had a deal on CAO Brazilias which I jumped at. That particular CAO cigar was one of the first I had ever had once I got into cigar enjoyment. And in taking care of this year’s Pick’em winner, I have other things coming in as well. Assuming that I can get a break from snow and ice, you’ll have a new review from me next week Friday.

What is being poured

The Islay Gold and Auchentoshan American Oak are still being enjoyed when time allows. In my music travels over the last few weeks, that particular group likes to hit up Mexican restaurants for the cost effectiveness of food (chips and salsa) and alcohol (beer specials). When it is my turn to drive on these trips, I will forego the beer specials and usually look to tequila to enjoy, at least in a limited fashion. Tequila isn’t the first liquid libation to be thought of with cigar smoking but it can certainly have a place and the nice aspect of the drink is that the cost factor can vary greatly. I’ll make it a point here in the next few weeks or so to pick out a bottle and do a formal review of it and how it pares to a cigar.

NFL Pick’em

It dawned on me that the regular season of NFL Football ended and I neglected to formally announce the winner. This year, with a score of 179 – 14 points ahead of the next person, the winner of the 2019 Leaf Enthusiast Pick’em League is Big Red Sausage. We have been in touch and will be getting a five pack of Crowned Heads Juarez cigars in the very near future. Thank you for everyone for playing this year. I’m planning on continuing the Pick’em League this year when the season starts up again.

That’s all for this week. For those like me who are trudging through the winter weather, be safe out there.
