Thoughts from the Smoking Chair – 12/20/19

The end of the year, as well as the official beginning of Winter for all of us in North America, rapidly approaches…although in many parts of the US, snowfall, ice and cold weather has certainly made itself known. This time of year, it’s always a mad dash to coordinate a bunch of school, work and music schedules all at the same time. At the same time, it is a period of reflection to look back on the year and evaluate. In the cigar world, this is where we all figure out what we enjoyed (and sometimes not) during the year. My favorites for the year will be coming next Friday. In the interim, I thought I would leave you with a few thoughts and a quick update on this year’s NFL Pick’em League.

What’s hanging around the humidor

To be perfectly honest, I would have to be home long enough to enjoy a cigar and right now, that hasn’t happened. I’m been booked solid through the whole month of December, so my cigar enjoyment has taken a hit. When it has happened however, a Drew Estate Undercrown brought me some well needed cigar relaxation. I was even a bit fortunate and lucky to enjoy a Cuban Cohiba after an event with a local bandleader of mine at the club he is a member of. I’m hoping to carve out some time here once Christmas hits (and the days after) to have more time to relax with some cigars.

Libations

The Islay Gold from my last review is still a hit in the house, although the contents of the bottle have been depleting for some reason. My wife calls this portion of school “the final stretch”. Can’t say I really blame here for that. In addition, a friend of mine gifted me a bottle of Auchentoshan American Oak for assisting him with a computer setup. I find it very different from many of the normal whiskies I enjoy. You may be seeing a review of it early next year if the contents of the bottle don’t disappear too quickly.

As you can see from the graphic above, this more or less looks like a done deal for Big Red Sausage with a 14 point lead. Assuming he/she doesn’t fall asleep at the wheel and forget to submit picks, I think they’ll be very happy to win some cigars.

That’s all for this week. I hope everyone out there has a Merry Christmas and I look forward to sharing my favorites from 2019 with you all next Friday.
