Cigar Review: The Crowned Heads Tennessee Waltz

Crowned Heads Tennessee WaltzVitola: Robusto Extra
Size: 5.50″ x 52 ring gauge
Price $9.99
Purchased from Burns East

Background

Earlier this year Jon Huber announced that they were going to be creating a regular (not limited) release for their Tennessee retailers.  After looking over the specifics of the blend I was a bit disappointed since they would only be available in TN.  I knew I could count on Dave making sure I was able to purchase some though.  The name Tennessee Waltz is a tribute to the song.  Jon said that this song was playing when his maternal grandparents met and that he heard his grandfather whistling it throughout his childhood.  The cigars are comprised of a Nicaraguan filler and binder with a Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper.  At the moment they only come in this one size in 20 count boxes.  These cigars are made by My Father Cigars in Nicaragua.  I’ve had a few of these cigars before this one I smoked for review.  You can check out The Hippie’s review of this cigar here.

Prelight

The wrapper on this sample was a nice even dark chocolate brown with some golden hints to it.  The band isn’t much, just a Vols orange ribbon around the foot.  The wrapper showed lots of tooth as well as some oils as well.  When I gave it a squeeze it was fairly firm without any soft spots.  The wrapper gave off the aroma of leather with barnyard coming from the foot.  After clipping it and taking a cold draw on it I got some sugary sweetness with a slightly tight draw.

Flavor

The cigar stars off with the flavors of chocolate and peanut brittle with a good amount of spice on the retrohale.  A little ways in I started to get some coffee, earth and slightly salty favors from it as well.  The spice did build a bit towards the end of the first third.  The cigar starts off at the upper end of medium strength.  As I moved into the second third the spice did tone down a bit.  The flavors were similar to the first third; coffee, leather, earth and wood but with a much sweeter finish.  The strength built a bit but not too much during this third.  When I got into the final third the flavors didn’t change other than I started to get some chocolate again.  The strength built to the medium-full range as I started to get a slight nicotine hit from it.  The spice on the tongue and retohale started to come back again as well.

Construction

The draw on this example was a little tighter than I prefer, but it wasn’t plugged.  The other samples of this cigar I’ve had were almost perfect.  The burn was slightly wavy but didn’t need any correction.

Value

I think that this cigar represents a great value for a small production cigar.

Conclusions

Ok, now I’ll tell you exactly how many of these cigars I’ve smoked before this review.  I didn’t want it to color your judgement.  I purchased a 5 pack off of Dave when the first hit the store.  By the time I was through those I had already put my name on the waiting list at Burns for when they would get more in.  I’ve had another 5 out of the box I purchased.  So yeah I like the cigar.  I would recommend you giving this cigar a try if you are a fan of Connecticut Broadleaf, The Crowned Heads, or My Father Cigars.  While it has some strength I think that only the most sensitive would have issues.
