Thoughts from the Smoking Chair – 07/03/20

Welcome to summer. Hopefully everyone out there is staying safe and keeping cool. I will say that despite the temperatures creeping up, we’ve had enough rain over the last week to make lounging outside with drinks and cigars quite pleasant. And as my wife and I have been enjoying our mostly free evenings (after the kids crash), I just didn’t have enough time to knock a review out this week. Below is what I’ve been enjoying on the deck over the last few weeks.

What’s hanging around the humidor

Over the last few weeks, there have been a few varieties of cigars floating around. The daily smokes have been a couple different bundles of the Drew Estate Factory Smokes I’ve reviewed in the past. The local B&M closest to my house started carrying a couple new flavors of Nub Nuance. One I enjoyed, the other not so much. They and another local store started carrying the Diesel Whiskey Row and Sherry Cask lines. One or both of those will likely make an appearance as a review in the future. Very different from each other but solid smokes. And with a friend of mine calling me the other day and telling me he got gifted with some Caldwell Cigars, I’m getting the itch to find a few of those for review, and likely a few other things in the same vein.

What is being poured

After a recent music rehearsal, the jazz combo I play with hit up a local bar and grill we don’t normally frequent. While enjoying some excellent mango habanero wings, I enjoyed an Alaskan Brewing Co. Fireweed Blonde which was quite tasty. Here at home, we just polished off a bottle of El Padrino Anejo from our local Total Wine. If you haven’t had this one yet or don’t normally drink tequila with your cigar, it pairs great. It balances out a full bodied cigar while being a complement to milder fare. Drink it straight (my choice) or as a mixer (goes well with various carbonated waters). I’m sure it’s great in margaritas as well. And just last night, since the tequila has been enjoyed, I cracked a new bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail. It’s one of my favorite Islay single malts and is in many regards a liquid version of smoke, peat and campfire. A perfect pairing for a cigar if I may say so. A review of that is likely in the future.

NFL Pick’em 2020

If the NFL happens this year (which I think it will), then plan on the Pick’em League happening as well. More details will come out on this as information comes out regarding the NFL season and its start.

That’s all for this week. Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend for those in the United States.
